Thomas Hobbes and John Locke both developed theories of the state. They both focus on the state of nature. Both Hobbes and Locke were influenced by Descartes but they did not believe all that Descartes claimed. I will develop a comparative study between Thomas Hobbes' and John Locke's theory of the state.
Hobbes claims that in the state of nature, people's actions are the cause of their own selfishness and their pursuit to obtain happiness. The state of nature existed before there was any government. For Hobbes, the state of nature is a what it would be like if there were no laws, no right and wrong, no good and bad. The law of nature is a little different. According to Hobbes, the law of nature is simply the way that things go. In the state of nature, things are chaotic and conflicts arise due to everyone trying to obtain happiness...
