Diabetes has a great impact on America. It is a metabolic disorder in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin causing the glucose, a form of sugar, to build up. Insulin is the hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. In diabetes too much glucose stays in the blood. Approximately seventeen million people in the United States have diabetes. Diabetes is a lifelong disease that has no cure. There are two main types of diabetes, Type I and Type II, which have similar symptoms but have varied causes and treatments.
