Iran after the Islamic revolution
For the most part of its history, Iran and its people enjoyed a free and careless
Existence, free from a restrictive government. It could be said that Iran was one of the few countries in the Middle East that had been influenced by western culture on a grand scale. Since coming to power in 1941, Reza Shah Pahlavi, the king of Iran, had placed religion in the background of society and had embraced the West and their societal ideals. However, the largely Muslim people in Iran disagreed with the way the Shah was altering their traditional ways into western ones. Right around this point, in 1979, an Islamic leader by the name of Ayatollah Khomeini was thought to be their only answer in stopping the Shah from further altering their country. ... (State Formation during the Reign of Reza Shah (1921-41), Internet) At this point Ayatollah Khomeini was given total control of Iran and converted the country into an Islamic state. It has now been 22 years since the revolution, and Iranians feel as though the tough Islamic government that they had once desired in 1979 is becoming unbearable. Tough Islamic law combined with stubborn leaders has made daily life difficult. ... The Islamic revolution has adversely affected the lives of many Iranians and will not be beneficial heading into the 21st century.
The Shah wanted to accomplish in Iran what Kemal Ataturk had in the neighboring nation of Turkey. ... The religious leaders of Iran knew this fact all too well. ... The Shah’s program of transforming Iran enraged many Islamic fundamentalists. They felt that he was destroying Iran’s societal norms, especially its Islamic traditions and ways of life. In a country where ninety-eight percent of the population were Muslim, it was surreal seeing such an un-Islamic way of life.
