The need for network security is very important in today's world of hackers and data crimes. Keeping a detailed log of how and what the network is doing and who has accessed it is valuable information. There are two types of event logging I can use to track the system. I would use historical logging to see what records there of all data passing through a particular computer. This is known as an audit log and what is typically recorded is all login/logouts, what files were opened/closed and what records were changed. It will also show me what users request service from what printer on the network. Statistical logging on the other hand will show me how long a user accessed a specific file but statistical logging does not keep record-level detail.
