Introduction
1. The daily flow of information in a Hospital is overwhelming an endless stream of data begins with the outpatient and admitting departments and continues from every other department throughout the hospital. Crucial decisions will be based on the facts established through use of information - the response of the hospital to the challenges of information resource management determines the quality of care and the success of the institution.
2. The "Information Revolution" is around us, yet the health care system has been slow to incorporate it effectively into the work environment. However, a few exceptions, including the Asvini project of the Navy and private hospitals such as Apollo group and others stand out like beacons that show the way for others to exploit IT for increased effectiveness.
3. Healthcare organisations are finding that they do not have systems in place to allow them to answer questions that are critical for strategic planning in a competitive environment. In addition to administrative and financial data, clinical data are now important for institutional self-analysis and strategic planning.
