Throughout our lives, our sight is enhanced in hundreds of different ways. This enhancement enables us to view the world with a new perspective.
Mental imagery is a key component in the enhancement of sight. Mental imagery allows people to picture and idea and gives it some physical value in the persons mind. Most sight enhancers begin as random thoughts crossing a scientists mind. Astrophysicist Lyman Spitzer used visual imagery to imagine a telescope in space circling the earth that would provide much clearer images, of even farther-off objects, than any ground-based telescope. This visual image enabled Spitzer to lobby NASA and Congress to build one of the greatest sight-enhancers ever created, The Hubble Space Telescope.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has enhanced our view and understanding of the universe significantly. Some major findings from the HST include: the deepest visible look back in time to the era when galaxies first formed (~12 BYA), detected relic helium from the Big Bang in the vast distances between galaxies discovered stellar nurseries in huge, towering clouds of gas and dust in Orion and the determination that planets apparently accompany the formation of nearly all stars, and proof that our own solar system is surrounded by a huge spherical cloud of comets (Ort's cloud). These enhancements enable us to make hypotheses about the universe to explain certain phenomena such as strong confirmation for the presence of a pervasive "dark energy" which is accelerating the expansion of the universe, and the first unequivocal proof for the existence of massive black holes at the centers of galaxies (including our own)...
