Ringgold is a city located in Catoosa county in northern Georgia. It is located about twelve miles southwest of Chattanooga near Taylor's Ridge. There is a gap about one hundred yards wide, and half a mile east of Ringgold, where the battle happened. That is how it became known as The Battle of Ringgold Gap. It was an important city in the Civil War, where much activity took place, as well as being known to be a very important town on the Western and Atlantic railroad. In eighteen sixty two through eighteen sixty three, Ringgold was the site of many hospitals. These hospitals were later moved south in October of eighteen sixty three to avoid capture by Union forces.
