Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was a great American citizen. She was willing to give her life so
that other people could have their freedom. And that is exactly what our country
is based upon, freedom for all living people.
Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in 1820. Her parents were from the Ashanti
Tribe in West Africa, so she was purely African ancestry. She was raised under
harsh conditions, and was whipped even as a small child. At age 12 she suffered a
blow to the head, when an overseer threw a lead block and hit her in the temple. She
was knocked out and suffered from blackouts for the rest of her life.
Her life never got any easier, in fact the older she became, the harsher the slave drivers
became and the harder life was. She then heard she was going to be sold to someone in
the south, so she planned and executed her escape...
