The subject for this case study is a 45 year old female who suffered a CVA approximately seven years ago and is still in the continuing process of recovery and obtaining maximum functional ability and independence. The original CVA resulted in slight hemiparesis on her right side and caused several impairments including gait and reaching deficits. This paper will include relevant information regarding examination and history of this patient, go over evaluation techniques leading to a diagnosis and prognosis, and discuss appropriate intervention strategies and how they might achieve the functional goals for this patient.
A typical examination must include a detailed medical and social history of the patient as well as an in-depth review of all physiological systems. This patient, as already stated, is s/p CVA and has regained much of her strength and function but still maintains some significant deficits. The patient recalls having blurred vision and then falling over at a bus stop on her way to work. She was not hospitalized initially, as medical personnel smelled ETOH and attributed her symptoms to other sources. Other relevant medical history includes aneurysm 2 years following stroke which required surgery through the frontal bone behind her right eye. She also has a pre-stroke history of blood clots, for which she was put on Coumadin, although she was nor on Coumadin at the time of the stroke.
