Fahrenheit 451 In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury used several literary items that helped Montag realize that burning books and the society hew lived in was wrong. What certain items and people assisted Montag in his ways of changing and how? In Montag’s world books are immoral. They were in the world to be burned and Montag was more then happy to burn them. "It is a pleasure to burn. It is special to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed.” (3) From the early years of his firefighting career, he never once doubted his life and the process of burning books. It was instilled in the minds of every child from their young age to old that books were wrong and needed to be destroyed. It was the beliefs of everyone that books were bad, well, almost everyone. Montag was content in his world; he never once doubted his place in it, until he met Clarisse. Clarisse was a very in depth thinker; she was always exploring things beyond “what? or “how?” she wanted to know “why?”. Because of the way Clarisse thinks she ended up dead, but not before she helped Montag escape the crazy world he was living in. After an unexpected meeting between them, while walking home, they quickly made the walk home an evening ritual. On the walks home, Montag and Clarisse covered topics from billboards to Montag’s firefighting career.
