In the novel, “Catcher in The Rye”, Holden is constantly trying to run from one of his biggest fears which is Change in life. There are many things that support this thesis, which include both topics and themes. There are three main topics that support this, each having it’s own information to back it up. The three main topics and themes from the book are: “ Growing up too quickly”, “Phoniness in our society”, and “Adolescent problems and pressures”. In the novel, Holden appears to be fighting the battle of something that cannot be changed or held back. He is constantly trying to resist the process of growing up. Holden has always been happy just being a kid and not having to worry about all the things adults have to go through. In the novel there is evidence that Holden is still in a children’s state of mind. From his immaturity to the way he dresses, it all gives people around him the impression that he just doesn’t care about life and does not want to face the fact that he is growing up.
