A journalist named Pierre Berton once said, "Racism is a refuge for the ignorant. It seeks to divide and to destroy. It is the enemy of freedom, and deserves to be met head-on and stamped out." You might think that racial injustice doesn't exist in the law any more, but that is NOT TRUE! Racial injustice is still around and examples can be seen in many court rooms. This statement is especially true for the United States. It has been proven that application of the death penalty is racially biased. People who are charged with committing a crime of any degree often appear to be judged based on the colour of their skin. Statistical evidence from Amnesty International's website (1999) shows that the judicial systems value white life over black. It was also shown that black persons are more likely to be charged with committing a crime. Plus, it has been shown that more black people are convicted for the murder of white people than vice versa. Research has shown that once someone commits a murder the fact that they are an African American can be an aggravating factor in the courts.
