Environmental awareness in Italy has grown in recent years. ... The Italian government is strengthening the environmental laws gradually, not only in response to the publics opinion but also because of the country’s obligations as a member of the European Union. Recently Italy was granted a two year extension on the EU’s Auto Oil Fuel Directive, and would require Italy to end leaded gasoline by January 1, 2000.
Italy first took on a Clean Air Act in 1966, there were additional regulations that were added in 1983 and in 1988 that set up guidelines for the controlling of pollution. Over the decades Italy has been making an immense improvement in reducing sulfur dioxide. Italy has the highest level of car ownership in the world, air quality in Milan, Rome , Turin , Florence , and Bologna, has lessened in recent years.
