An operating system is the most important software. It provides functionality for hardware and software, and other functions such as networking and security. Most people commonly use Microsoft Windows that comes preinstalled on their computers. Other than the Windows line of operating systems, an average computer user doesn't even know other operating systems exist. One of the most popular alternatives is Linux. Linux is superior operating system although it isn't as user-friendly as Windows.
Linux was created by a Linus Torvalds, a Computer Science college student at the University of Helsinki. Compared to Windows, Linux is very young. It was first released in 1991, but it has roots from the 1960s as it is based on the UNIX operating system.
