One of the greatest controversial topics of our time is whether or not to venture into our national parks and drill for oil. Timothy Egan covers this topic in great detail in his text, "The Great Alaska Debate, Can Oil And Wilderness Mix?" The main debate on this topic would have to be whether or not the government should allow the oil industry to drill in the vast national parks in Alaska which may or may not have large amounts of oil in a reservoirs under the tundra that many say is the one of the world's last truly wild places. On one side of the argument is the oil industries consisting of Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Texaco, and other major oil industries who are pro drilling in the tundra of Alaska. On the side opposing the future drilling of Alaska are the environmentalist and many indigenous tribes that live in the region. Many pros and cons to the affects of the drilling in the tundra of Alaska have been brought to attention of Congress and other government officials by both sides of the argument. These pros and cons have dealt with the affects the drilling will have on the economy, the habitat of certain wildlife that dwell in the areas considered for drilling, and the way of life of the aborigines that live in these areas.
