Do you come from a divorced family or know someone who does? Divorce is an emotional experience for families and its impact can be quite difficult for children. Children react in different ways with the onset of divorce and no matter what the situation, the child will somehow be effected. During divorce, the parents influence the children by giving them a sense of security. Children dealing with divorce often have behavioral problems, trouble adjusting to a new family, and realize the positive affects of divorce.
Depending on the age of the child, behavior can range from very mild, such as difficulty sleeping, to extremely destructive behavior, such as drug and alcohol abuse or even violence. With younger children, such as pre-school age, there is often a change in their normal eating or sleeping patterns which is often a sign that the child is experiencing distress. Bed-wetting is also a common sign of distress, and may be an expression of anxiety or anger. School-age children may act as if they "don't care" and put on an act in front of friends and family, while some kids may deny the fact their parents are getting divorced.
