Midnight's Children
In the novel by Salman Rushdie, Midnight's Children, Saleem Sinai is mostly the main character and protagonist throughout the entire story. This novel explores the ways that history has given meaning through individual experience. Saleem Sinai was born at the instance of India's independence from Britain. At that instant, Saleem's life becomes linked with the political, national, and religious events of that time. Not only does Saleem experience many of those crucial historical events, but he also is involved in some of them personally.
The story lines during the story were sort of confusing at times and were very hard to follow and to put together. Eventually they were knitted together though so I could say I had a sense that I knew and understood the main character, Saleem. I would definitely have to say that Saleem was a tortured spirit at times. Saleem expresses that his private life has been very public from the very moment of his birth. His life was so confusing and messed up that he has to be considered a tortured spirit...
