Amy Tan's emotional story "Two Kinds" is an excellent example of people trying to change other people. There are many different reasons why one person would want to change another person. Unless it is that person's choice to change, it really is hard changing another person. Everyone is different, which makes us each who we are deep down inside. Jing-Mei's mother's new hopes after reaching America relied on changing her daughter into a prodigy, which is a really hard thing to do. In the long run, Jing-Mei realizes that her mother was only encouraging her to try her best, not to change her.
In the story, Jing-Mei and her mother moved from China to America in 1949 after they had lost their home and virtually every family member in China. Once in America, the hopes and dreams were put on Jing-Mei's shoulders as a prodigy. A prodigy is a very smart person, usually at a younger age. It appears to be a good plan because if Jing-Mei can show that she can master something early; she may become famous and make a good living...
