Childhood is a time of sunny days, blue skies, and beautiful memories- - Unless one's childhood was Richard Wrights. In the novel Black Boy by Richard Wright, his youth was a cold bleak existence, carved with hatred and overlaid with hunger. There seemed to be no hope for Richard and his future. All Richard had was himself with a little help from mom, to survive and to struggle to get through life. It was Richards's experiences with his family, Racism, and financial difficulties as a Black boy that beautifully shaped Richards attitude.
Richards's family despaired of him, as was evidenced by the family's confrontations with Richard. For example, Richard pulled a knife on Uncle Tom because Richard was going to be beaten for an unknown reason. This event constructed an impenetrable wall between the two that was never to come down. With this incident, Richard learned not to trust. For who would offer kindness towards him if his family members did not?..
