Dear Tom, This memo will address my strategy concerning the specific set of issues regarding internal and external processes and how the relationship between cost assignment and profit generation relate to the management and delivery of services. This report will describe specifically: • My recommendations on the issues involved by the new profit center “creative central” • Discussion of the feedbacks received from the four executives interviewed regarding this decision and strategic plan to adopt. This section will specifically develop which response was the most helpful, which was the least helpful; the issues in the case that might exist in the lodging and food service operation and finally conclude with examples of companies that encountered the same kind of challenges. Should Camden pull the plug on its newest profit center? And why? The answer is no! The company should give to its newest unit some time to reorganize its business in order to set up real infrastructure , develop a brand and moreover satisfy both internal and external costumers, giving of course a priority to the internal customers. It is crucial for every single company to know how to manage talents. Eric Palmer has obviously created a unique team of very competent people. The only problem is that the goals and objectives were not stated as clearly as they should have been at the beginning. It would be a huge loss for Camden to cut off this business unit because of the existing gap between the marketing department and the rest of the company. You should consider it as a misunderstanding and give Eric Palmer some time to refocus on its priorities. Management should not forget that this reorganization has been a success for the company. Instead of a massive layoff, Eric Palmer has managed to turn this unit into a profit center and maximize the labor force of Camden. And it is very important for the sake of the company. A great company can be composed of very successful independent units; the only weakness in the actual structure is in terms of organizational strategy. An internal roundtable should be done in order to redefine the objectives. The main issue is that Eric Palmer is a talented young man. He is very motivated and sees its business as a completely independent unit of Camden. Some time should be spent in order to redefine the priorities of Creative Central. You gave him the opportunity to develop his priorities in terms of profitability and not in terms of internal satisfaction. Business priorities have to be redefined from the beginning. You should organize a business meeting with Eric Palmer in order to redefine the main objectives of the new profit center. A good idea might be to cut off any new search of external customers for the year to come. Eric Palmer could stay with its current external customers but this year’s objectives would be to focus on the internal customers in order to really understand the necessities of the company.
