The Catcher in the Rye
It has often been said that "that which does not kill us only makes us stronger." This is true, but can an emotional breakdown be seen as death? It is a double sided question, because there are two answers which oppose each other. No, because the person is still living, breathing, eating. But yes, because the person is void of all emotion, they have no desire to live, and might as well be dead- they are on the inside anyway. This question is explored in J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye. The story focuses on a 16 year-old boy, Holden Caulfield, and the problems in his life.
