As you know our debate
position is that the War Time Elections act and military voters act
were not necessary. Nicola has already acknowledged that the
government was using their power to keep their power and also
that the two acts did not benefit anyone except for the government,
which is extremely selfish. I will now continue to prove that the
War Time Elections Act and Military Voters Act put in place in
1917 was not needed.
My first point on why the War Time elections act and military voters
act were not good laws because they were very discriminatory to certain
Canadians. If you were born in a country other then Canada also
known as an "alien country" and became naturalized after 1902, then
you were not allowed to vote.
There is a process called naturalization, which is a procedure that the
government followed to allow immigrants to become a british subject.
The procedure was carried out by a court official and each person to be
naturalized had toswear an oath of allegiance. The procedure took up to
5 years and what it does is proves that this person is a "good character".
So why is that people who came to Canada after 1902 and were
naturalized weren't allowed to vote? They have just gone through
this process to prove that they are a good person, now they are
being told that they can not vote...
