What Art Means To Me
Art makes me think in two arenas. First I think of the idea that a skill or set of skills is often referred to as “an art. ... I think modern society tends to view any such skill or set of skills called an art as being highly refined, yet somewhat inexact in determination or quantification. ... There is an implication that a science can be mastered by diligence and methodology, while an art can only be mastered by those things combined with talent.
The second arena is the more common and will occupy the preponderance of my thought here: art as object. ... Obviously however, not all objects are art. What makes an object art? Much like the skills labeled an “art” can be ephemeral, what makes an object art can be debatable. It is only fair to say that whether an object is art or not is mostly, if not entirely, subjective. ... I generally think, as do most people, that an object of art implies something that is created by human action.
