Plague. An injurious outbreak. A simple, 6 letter word that caused great changes during medieval times in Europe. The Bubonic plague killed 24 million in its first round and perhaps as many as 20 million by its finish, a third of Europe's population in the 1300's. It brought about many changes in Western civilization. There were changes in the way people communicated with each other, changes in how they lived, but most importantly, an overall change of mind.
The name Bubonic plague was derived from the Greek word boubon, which means, "groin". This was a very fitting name since swollen lymph nodes in the groin area was a very common occurrence from the plague. Three types of Bubonic plague were present during this time: simple, pneumonic, and septocemic. Headache, weakness, aches and chills, rapid pulse, slurred speech, fatigue, and confusion were just a few more of the symptoms victims of the Bubonic Plague experienced...
