MDMA, commonly known as ecstacy is an ever growing issue that continues to grow in usage among today's youth. Ecstacy is a trendy drug used by youths to help create a pleasureful, distorted view of reality, sadly though this drug has been known to cause complications such as: hallucinations, liver complications, brain damage, and depression. It is a synthetic, psychoactive drug with amphetamine and hallucinogenic properties. Its chemical structure (3,4- methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is similar to two other synthetic drugs, MDA and methamphetamines such as heroin, which are known to cause brain damage (Facts about MDMA).
History
Ecstasy has a relatively long history. Germany issued the patent for it in 1914 to the German pharmaceutical company E. Merck. Cloud writes, contrary to the ecstasy lore, and ""there's tons of it,"" Merck was not trying to develop a diet drug when it synthesized MDMA. Instead, its chemists simply thought it could be a promising intermediary substance that might be used to help develop more advanced therapeutic drugs.
