Throughout their history, Americans have been characterized as inventive, original people with a unique perspective. These characteristics have led to the creation of many unique thoughts on politics and society in the United States. One nineteenth century American invention that has been a significant aid in viewing and interpreting history in the United States is the parade. This uniquely American celebration provides a light for historians to focus on in uncovering the intricacies of American cultural development. The parade is important because it provides historians specific documentation of past events. The implications of parades can easily be applied to society in a general manner because of their popularity throughout the country. Their universal acceptance makes them precise historical documents when examined singularly, as well as universal facilitators of national unity when taken as a whole. While no two parades were identical, Americans in all corners of the nation can identify with a parade. This unique quality allows the parade to create, and then become the evidence that national identity is a "real" quality.
