Throughout this book, J Feldstein demonstrates the value of power economic analysis has and at the same time; help understand issues related to the politics and economics of health services. In order to solve policy problems, Feldstein believes the market forces should be allowed free rein. This book provides and excellent starting point for an introductory class in health economics. Subjects include managed care competition and legislation, barriers to and benefits of integration, financing long-term care, the role of government in medical care, and national health insurance.
In the first three chapters the books prime focus is around expenditures. As we closely examine the first chapter, we can see the emphasis is placed on the rise of medical expenditures because the factors like price and quantity are affected. Prices are usually examined through interventions that change behaviors of buyers and sellers. For example, Medicare lowered the out of pocket price that the aged had to pay for medical care. In this case the result was an increase in the demand for hospital and physician services by aged, leading to an increase in price. The total expenditures increased because the higher process multiplied by greater quantity equaled a higher level of expectations...
