Investigation to work out factors affecting osmosis in potato tissue
Plan
There are any factors which effect osmosis in a potato. In the investigation I have decided to focus on discovering how the concentration (of salt solution) affects osmosis. Osmosis is a type of diffusion where water molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a partially permeable membrane. The permeable membrane has small holes in it and works like a sieve. This means it allows water to pass through but will prevent substances with larger molecules like sugar or salt passing through.
It can be defined more simply as:
'The net movement of water molecules from a weak solution to a stronger one across a partially permeable membrane.'
I am going to use potato chips in the experiment because this has a partially permeable membrane.
To help me reach the conclusion as to how different concentrations affect the change in mass during osmosis I am going to do several experiments. To make sure the results I collect from the experiments are accurate enough to reach a clear conclusion I have to keep certain other factors, which may affect osmosis, constant and therefore have a fair test.
Fair test
Temperature- to make sure the temperature is kept constant at all times I am going to do the experiment in the same room and on the same day so it is at the same room temperature and under the same atmospheric conditions...
