The economic conditions of the music industry are very complex. With the constant introduction of new artists, it's often difficult to determine their success or failure. As noted in the case, "many labels stated that less than 20% of the recordings they released recouped their costs"(Case p. 283). With the success of the mergers and acquisitions of the 80's and 90's, BMG Entertainment became one of the top five corporations in the music industry.
