Role of Accents in Society

Everyone in the world speaks with an accent. Rosina Lippi-Green looked at several Disney films and the impact of accents of characters in animated films. I chose to look at the movie Gone With The Wind. I chose this movie because there are three distinct accents in the three main characters in the movie. I chose Scarlett O'Hara, played by Vivien Leigh; Rhett Butler, played by Clark Gable; and Mammie, played by Hattie McDaniel. I choose these three people because they each have separate, distinctive accents. Leigh has the upper-class Southern accent, Gable has less of an accent and could even be considered to speak Standard English but he has a slight Southern accent, McDaniel has a Southern AAVE accent. I looked at where each person was from and at what part they were portraying. All of the characters are good characters, they are just living life, and they aren't doing anything bad. Also, all of the characters' accents are meant to reinforce where they are from and what they represent...
