Many scientific theories have been met with controversy from various groups, especially religious ones. They have a hard time refusing to abandon outdated or incorrect teaching, therefore, clinging onto tradition (Henderson 1). This was the case when Galileo abandoned the geocentric view for the solar system of the heliocentric view.
In his time period, Galileo could safely propose the heliocentric theory, a simple method for accounting for the planet's motion (Henderson 1). His problem occurred when he stopped proposing it as a scientific theory and began proclaiming it as truth. In 1614, Galileo felt compelled to answer the charge that this theory was contrary to certain scripture passages (Winslow 1). His opponents pointed to the Bible passages with statements like, "And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed . . ." (Josh...
