the Buddha Statues in Bamiyan
I believe that the statues of the Buddhas in Bamiyan should not be replaced. They were destroyed for a terrible reason, because of an overtaking Afghanistan. If the statues are left untouched, only having the niches they once stood in would have a greater impact on the people of what they and their ancestors had overcome. The Buddha statues were erected thousands of years ago by great Buddhist followers who should be remembered along with their amazing artwork. The first reason I believe that they should not rebuild the statues is because I believe that artwork is like people and cannot be replaced. Secondly, I do not think that the Buddhas should be replaced because every time the people of Bamiyan looked at them, it would only serve as a reminder of their lost loved ones. Lastly, I think that these niches should be left as a memorial. The Buddhas of Bamiyan are lost. But much can still be saved in Afghanistan whose unique cultural heritage bears witness to the exceptional dialogue between civilizations that has shaped the country since antiquity (Dupree 1). Even if the material statues are not in Bamiyan today, the memory of they is and that is all the people need to overcome their struggles...
