In the United States today there are many uncertainties that an average person knows to watch out for. People need to be making these same decisions when they chose to use the Internet. You cannot protect someone from everything that could happen; you can, however, inform them so they can make the smartest decision. Censoring the Internet in the United States would strip citizens of educational sites, scientific resources, and most importantly, our first amendment rights; instead we should concentrate our efforts on giving people choices, not taking them away.
Many pro-censorship citizens will bring up the points that the Internet is a dangerous place and that young children can easily access pornography and other aggressive sites. They may declare that movies and television are censored or that people in other countries have stronger censorship laws. In truth, these values of what a child should or should not have access to come from the parents that raise them. Adults should have the choice to view all material they would like, and it is the responsibility of a parent to protect their child.
