The great age of castles began almost 1,000 years ago and lasted for 500 years. During this age, nearly 50,000 castles were built all across Europe and the Near East. Castles and castle walls were built in the age of war for protection of the city or town. Castles weren't only used for protection from fierce enemies. Inside the castle was a magnificent hall, comfortable chambers and a beautiful chapel.
The most powerful people were the king and queen. Next came the bishop who led the church, the rich lord and lady, the fighting knights, the merchant, the nun and the poor peasant. Every person knew their place and the less powerful took orders from the more powerful. In the earlier times, the king lived in the castle but later most kings and queens wanted to live outside the castle in their own homes. Then the lord and lady would live in the castle...
