Willow to Survive
As has become more apparent in recent years, the original negative copies of films are in danger of decay and disintegration. ... Being that preservation of one movie is expensive, that makes it nearly impossible to save every film ever made, and it’s already too late for that. Therefore we must choose movies that are important to save; those that have had an impact on us, and that we may feel our children might one day enjoy and feel the same way about.
One movie in particular that I would like to see saved, is the classic fantasy tale Willow. ... My personal copy of Willow is the original VHS release of the movie, and I know that I would like to own a re-mastered copy, because my own copy has faded profusely since its original purchase; especially to some day show my children and following generations.
I’m not going to make the argument that Willow is one of the greatest movies of all time. ... Borrowing bits and pieces from various other stories, such as the undeniable Tolkien character bases, as well as Lucas’ obvious Star Wars influences, Willow merges many ideas and stories into one adventure. ...
As a children’s movie, Willow is essential to keep preserved. First of all, the main character, Willow Ufgood, played by Warwick Davis, is an Elvin. ... He is extremely naïve to the workings of the real world outside his Elvin forest village, yet Willow then rises up to a challenge placed before him, and despite his inexperience and lack of physical strength, ends up triumphant.
