So, maybe Van Sant's motivation behind remaking - in conjunction with Ron Howard's powerhouse production company, Imagine - the 1960 classic that defined movie suspense for a generation was the challenge of updating Psycho, applying to it the fashionable sensibility of the popular ironic horror sub-genre.
