What is a place? What shapes a personal place? Place is defined as 'a concept with two levels of meaning: a) an objective location that has both uniqueness and interdependence with other places, b) a subjective social and cultural construct somewhere that has a personal meaning for the individual or group' . To me, a personal sense of place means a location where an individual or a group have certain personal feelings, values, and usefulness. Toronto's Regent Park is Canada's largest and oldest community housing project. It is a place where many people from different cultural-ethnic background live in affordable or low-income housing complexes.
Many residents in Regent Park who have lived there for over six years have developed certain personal feelings and values towards the community. They have their own cognitive space, which means the 'nature and degree of people's values, feelings, beliefs and perception about the locations, districts and regions' . This community has brought them joys and feelings of comfort and over the span of six years, it has given them the opportunity or the chance to make new friends and have a social life within the community.
