The Declaration of Independence is an important factor in American independence and history. The Declaration of Independence was formed during the American Revolution, in which the colonists were trying to gain freedom and independence from the British. It was a document that portrayed the rise of a new nation and the independence that the colonists wanted from the British.
The Declaration of Independence was written on July 4th, 1776. It was written by Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock the governor of Massachusetts, and signed by the congress, including 56 members from each of the 13 colonies (E-Library). Jefferson later became the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809 (Online). The main goal of the Declaration of Independence was to set forth an idea of freedom and independence for the colonists. The document "set forth a philosophy of human freedom that would become a dynamic force throughout the entire world"(Cincotta, Ch 3, p. 8).
