Katie chose to walk a different path and those in her life turned their backs on her. According to the law, her own family was not even supposed to speak to her. Her mother's heart broke when she shared her desire to find a life outside of the Amish lifestyle and faith. Her community would not even make eye contact with her. It was not necessarily their choice, but they had to follow the laws of their faith. When someone does wrong they are to be shunned from everyone in their lives. What a heartbreaking experience a shunning must be.
