Books one through four of the epic poem, the Odyssey, is about a young man, Telemachus, who goes off on a quest, with help from Athena, to find his father and complete himself, in turn saving Penelope and Ithaca. The Odyssey is a classic work of literature written by Homer, a well-known author who wrote about mythology. Starting off the book, Homer informs the reader that Odysseus has been away from home for 20 years. He is being held captive on the island of Ogygia, kept by the beautiful goddess Cyprious. At home in Ithaca Odysseus' wife Penelope faces problems dealing with waiting for her husband or choosing a new suitor. Telemachus is acting childishly and in turn gets treated like a child. He needs to stand up to the restless men and find his father. Telemachus will face many obstacles, but in the end courageously overcome them, find his father, mature, and save the day for his mother and Ithaca. He will achieve these feats because he is willing and perseveres towards accomplishing his final goals and is advised by the wisest of goddesses, Athena.
