What is the goal of jurisdictional rules?

The goal of jurisdictional rules is to determine what court a given case should be heard in as a factor of the power and authority of that court to decide the lawsuit and bind the parties to the final determination of the court (Okrent, 2001:45) where the parties in the case reside, the amount of money in dispute, and the location in which the acts or events involved in the dispute happens (Emery, Edwards, and Edwards, 2000:37). The power of the court to hear a case could have to do with the subject matter of the case (juvenile and family matters (Family Court); wills (probate court), etc.) A court's jurisdiction can also be related to the kind and value of property involved. The breakdown of the court system within a state is not specified in the constitution, so we find varying types and jurisdictions of courts at the state level or below. Less important cases tend to be heard by the municipal or (city-level) courts and more serious cases tend to be heard in the superior courts (or higher level state courts).
