THE FUTURE TREND OF INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEMS
Abstract: Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are an important component of defensive measures protecting computer systems and networks from abuse. Along with the development of computer systems, these systems also have become much more sophisticated with various detection techniques. This paper tries to figure out the future trend of the intrusion detection systems by systematically classifying and analyzing various approaches in this interesting area.
1. Introduction
When I started working on this reading project, I asked my self why do we need intrusion detection systems? The answer came up later but clear that there is no such thing like 100% security. In the 1990's, US and British Ministry of Defence spent an enormous amount of time, money, and other resources trying to secure their computer systems by applying the philosophy of risk avoidance [1]. However, this philosophy was proved through repeated penetration tests that it is practically unachievable. It is not an exception. A lesson learnt from the history shows that risk avoidance did not work for the Trojans [1]...
