Arguments about the cause and effects in any aspect of our social life are complex. One issue, which raises considerable interest, is that concerning racial discrimination and educational performance. In this particular piece I will be bringing both ideas together in order to support my hypothesis and prove that it is correct.
I have many ideas on the reasons behind the educational failure of Afro-Caribbean males which Functionalist would totally disregard my, as meritocracy is central to there approach to education. Functionalist firmly believed that our society is one where we achieve our status through our abilities leaving the individual to be blamed for their failure
Marxism is a conflict theory, which means that rather than viewing education as a positive institution that causes conflict to develop
One aspect of functionalist research was to attempt to identify the causes of underachievement. In most cases underachievement was traced to certain inadequacies of the home, generally remained unexamined
Interactionism attempts to break away from such structural analysis created by functionalist through focusing on the effects of the school organisation and teacher's behaviour and attitudes upon pupils.
Much of this research was carried out by interactionist largely in response to the simplistic explanation offered by functionalists who focus on the home background.
Many studies have been carried out concerning the performance of ethnic minority students, including the government sponsored Swann committee report "Education for all".
