Family in Storming Heaven

Many of the characters in Storming Heaven are related to each other. Certain other characters are treated as family even though they are not blood relatives. This forms a strong bond between some of the main characters. They face challenges as a family, celebrate as a family, eat dinner as a family, and fight a battle as a family. As the novel progresses some new people are welcomed into the "family" and some members are lost in the struggle. As a child I lived in a neighborhood where you were either family or treated as such. I have quite a few aunts and uncles with whom I have no blood relation. We were always welcome in each others homes and we did things together the same way the characters in the book did.
The word kin is used throughout the book to show that the characters feel a special bond to anyone who is even remotely related to them. Carrie says that her kin would be together until they died and then be together in heaven with her mother there too (Giardina 37)...
