Yucca Mountain
Over the last year Yucca Mountain has been an important issue in the United States of America. In the media we see politicians say they are either going to put a stop to Yucca Mountain or we see politicians say that they are for Yucca Mountain. The media does a good job at informing the public as to why Yucca Mountain was chosen as a repository site. It's understandable that Congress established a federal law called the Nuclear Waste Policy Act that made the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for finding a site, building, and operating an underground disposal facility called a geologic repository. The Department of Energy selected nine locations in six states as potential repository sites. The president approved to let scientist study three of these sites; Hanford, Washington; Deaf Smith County, Texas; and Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Congress then amended the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and directed the Department of Energy to only study Yucca Mountain.
