I am James A. Garfield. I was born on November 19, 1831 in Orange, Ohio. I worked on the farm with my father occasionally. We were a poor family so I had to find my own work to pay for my education, so I started driving canal boat teams to make some money. In 1856, I graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts, later that year I returned to Hiram College, in Ohio, as a classics professor. Within a year, I became the president of the college.
