Perfectionism: Perfect?
Perfectionism: A propensity for setting extremely high standards and being displeased with anything less (American Heritage Dictionary, 1976). Paul Hewitt, a practicing psychologist and professor at the University of British Columbia, has done studies and has shown that people who are perfectionists usually acquire problems such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and also other mental health problems. Many recent studies have shown and have kind of explained how perfectionism can give to psychopathology. Hewitt states: "In the literature right nowthis astounds mepeople have said that self-oriented perfectionism is adaptive. People will make that claim, and they'll just ignore the fairly large literature that says that it's a vulnerability factor for unipolar depression, anorexia, and suicide."
There are different types of perfectionism, where each type is related to different types of problems. But all forms of perfectionism have problems, although they might be small. Some forms of it may be adaptive. One argument has to do with famous athletes...
