IF CHARLES BABBAGE COULD SEE US NOW HE WOULD BE AMAZED! ... Often considered the father of modern computers, Babbage would probably be very pleased with the remarkable progress made in computer technology. Babbage’s Difference Engine and Analytical Engine proved that he was a man truly ahead of his time. Although Babbage never completely built a working machine his ideas and designs were inspirational in the computer science field.
In the early 1800’s, long before electricity and telephones had even been invented, Babbage was thinking of ways to handle, calculate, and organize information efficiently. Mechanical machines inspired by Babbage’s design were used for scientific studies throughout the 19th century. One of the first commercial uses, which resulted from Babbages ideas, was the punched card system used in the US census of 1890. Herman Hollerith, an American inventor, applied some of Babbage’s ideas to create the punched card system, which was used in the 1890 US census. ...
Yes, Babbage would truly be amazed as we all are with the computer technology that has changed and is changing our lives and our world.
