While the definitive origin of the Indian caste system is constantly disputed, it is generally agreed upon that the Caste system is one of the most ancient institutions of classification. Some scholars speculate that it was the invasion of the Aryans in circa 1500 B.C. that the Indian people were introduced to the system of caste. Others believe that caste system is the defining feature of Hinduism. No matter the origin, caste encompasses a complex ordering of social groups on the basis of purity in past lives. A person is categorized into the caste of his or her parents upon birth, and is considered a member of that caste until death. The Hindu's believe that one is placed in a certain caste because of deeds from a previous lifetime, or Karma. This ancient system has great implications is all aspects of Indian life, and, as will be discussed the caste system is one of the main reasons why India's economy is sluggish to gain world wide influence. The lack of education of the middle class and the resistance of India to move away from the caste system is a major hindrance to the further economic development of India's economy...
