An epic can be defined as a long poem about the adventures of a hero or heroine. The hero is referred to as an epic hero and embodies the characteristics of seeming to be larger that life; he can overcome odds, and will sacrifice for the humanities. Throughout the duration of the epic the hero will have to overcome major obstacles, and deal with many a hardship. The Ramayana is an epic poem told by Valmiki, which tells the story of the exile and adventures of Prince Rama, The Ramayana embodies all of the qualities of an epic poem.
The Ramayana starts off with the King Dasaratha, who wants his son Rama to take his place as the king of the Raghus. Rama was praised by all around him, as most epic heroes are. The poem goes into extremely deep detail about the aspects of Rama's personality and what a wonderful person he was, in fact the entire poem ends up being based around it. It is said later in the poem, "Benevolence, compassion, learning, good character, restraint, and equanimitythese are the six virtues that adorn Rama, the best of men"(611). Other adjectives that are used to describe Rama are: virtuous, righteous, even-tempered, kind-spoken, great self-control, cheerful, honest, and he was said to never have been spiteful or envious.
